The 2011, the Bonney Lake and Sumner Community Summit will take place at Calvary Community Church in Sumner. The 18th annual summit is a public forum for citizens to discuss and learn about the issues that affect their community, be they familial, medical, economic, civic or social.
This year’s theme is “Imagine — Together We Can,” a sentiment that will be expanded on by keynote speaker Dan Comsia. Comsia is district governor of Lions’ Clubs in western Washington. He holds dual masters degrees in counseling psychology and divinity, and his presentations “highlight powerful outcomes that happen when individuals commit to giving of themselves to help others,” according to a bio in the Summit brochure.
Community Summits are broken down into a pre-summit session, breakout sessions covering various topics, the Unsung Hero Awards, a complimentary dinner and the keynote speech.
The 3 to 4:45 p.m. Pre-Summit session will focus on the concept of servant leadership—serving the community by getting involved and leading—as described by Sumner High School leadership teacher John Norlin.
Topics to be covered in the 5 to 6 p.m. breakout session will include promoting healthy youth, Bonney Lake transit system development, activities to give children, drugs in the community, cyberbullying, and the economic downturn’s effect on families. During breakout session, attendees will have their choice of topic group to attend.
The evening will end in a plenary session that includes the Unsung Hero award ceremony recognizing the dedication of community leaders, dinner and the keynote speech.
People interested in attending the summit can register at www.sumnersd.org.
Calvary Community Church is located at 15116 Gary Street in Sumner.
