Sumner’s Phoenix Masonic Lodge 154 awarded two juniors from Sumner High School and two juniors from Bonney Lake High School $500 scholarships on April 27. An additional student who received one of the scholarships last year won $1,000 this year.
It was the 38th year the masonic lodge awarded its Junior Achievement scholarships. Under the program, members of the lodge grade essays—sans the authors’ names— submitted by junior students of Bonney Lake High School and Sumner High School. The best essays submitted by a boy and girl from each school are awarded the scholarship money.
The 2011 winners of the $500 scholarship were Bonney Lake High School students Courtney Franz and Andrew Cunningham, and Sumner High School students Jarron Petcovic and Gabrielle Phelps. Justin Niedermeyer of Bonney Lake High School won the $1,000 scholarship.
There were over 80 persons in attendance at the award ceremony, 76 of whom were not affiliated with any masonic lodge, according to a press release by the lodge.
