Fall storms may prompt door-to-door scams | Better Business Bureau

A recent powerful storm left damage across the Northwest. Strong winds knocked down trees leaving behind damaged roofs, clogged gutters and debris-strewn lawns. Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington is reminding homeowners to beware of door-to-door solicitors who may offer shoddy repairs, or even worse, are out to rip-off unsuspecting consumers.
The start of the rainy season could prompt pushy salespeople—so called “storm chasers”—who promise to offer low prices and quick repairs, but often they lack proper registration, training and licensing. Some take payment but do not stand behind their work.
Before hiring anyone to make repairs, consumers are urged to:
- Research a contractor online at bbb.org. BBB Accredited contractors are properly licensed, bonded and insured.
- Ask the contractor for references. Read reviews to see what past customers have to say about their experiences.
- Get a contract in writing. Be sure to take note of the company’s name, address and phone numbers.
- Never pay full prices upfront. Rather, pay for half at the beginning of the job and the other half after repairs are completed satisfactorily.
- Don’t fall victim to high-pressure tactics. Instead, ask for a business card and follow-up later, if necessary.
Storm victims should be suspicious of vague or hesitant answers. They should not accept work from companies that don’t offer contracts.
