Use National Night Out to connect with your neighbors

Editor’s note: The following is a press release from LINCCK Civility • Compassion • Kindness.
Neighbors Night Out (NNO) happens on Aug. 5, so do something good for your neighborhood and community by having a gathering of folks living nearby.
Perhaps just the two neighbors on either side of you, or have a block party. It’s easy to have get-togethers of any size occurring in front or back yards during the evening, and it’s always a positive force for good. New neighbors get a chance to meet folks, and old friendships get re-invigorated.
If your residential area does not otherwise come together for an event during the year, use NNO, always the first Tuesday of August, as the perfect opportunity to socialize. Build neighborhood camaraderie and make your world safer and a more caring place to live.
In the past there have been ice cream socials, barbecues, potlucks and even streets shut down. Each gathering is unique, but they all strengthened the vitality of the neighborhood. There have been various themes over the years, from emergency preparedness to neighborhood gardens. This year we’re just glad we can gather safely again. No need to register – just throw a get-together. You can reach out to your local fire or police department to see if they can arrange for a visit, which they have done in the past.
Analyzing our political climate, our world is quite polarized. This is a way to undo that polarization. Enhance neighborhood spirit and create a more compassionate community. Is there anyone in your neighborhood with special needs that in a time of emergency would welcome assistance? Who are the young children or wandering pets that would benefit from another pair of watchful eyes. Simply put, our community will be healthier if we know who lives beside us, if a friendly smile can be shared more often, if a helping hand can be offered more readily. Share our Facebook page or go to www.neighborsnightout.com for more information.
LINCCK Civility • Compassion • Kindness began NNO on the Plateau over a decade ago as a way to bring wellness to the community. LINCCK’s other venture, SoHaPP and the Habits for Happiness (www.sohapp.org), is designed to improve our mental wellbeing.
