The Enumclaw Hornets’ baseball team took to the field against Auburn Riverside but were met with a buzzsaw on the mound on Mar. 20.
The Hornets opened up their league season against Kent-Meridian and scored 36 runs in two games against the Royals. But Kaeden Morgan of Auburn Riverside cooled the hot Hornet bats.
Auburn Riverside scored one run in the first on a safety squeeze, setting the tone early that the Ravens were going to try to win with small ball.
Quin Nearhood took the ball for first year head coach Jamey Ingersoll and Nearhood had a solid outing for the Hornets. The junior went three innings, gave up three hits, three runs but just one was earned. Nearhood stuck out two and walked two while throwing 54 pitches.
On offense the Hornets managed five total hits, Kannius Alva had the lone extra-base hit. Alva smacked a triple in the right-center gap in the second inning, but was left stranded.
Auburn Riverside put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead heading to the fifth inning, but Enumclaw managed to get in the ball game with a run of their own.
A leadoff single from Oliver Potts followed by a walk from Kolt Kuzaro instantly put pressure on Riverside’s Morgan. With one out in the inning Graham Wager grounded out to shortstop Evan Walker plating Enumclaw’s lone run of the night.
Auburn Riverside would add a run in the fifth and sixth inning to put the nail in the Enumclaw coffin.
The Hornets continue their NPSL play on Mar. 23-24 as they begin a two game series against the Auburn Mountainview Lions.
