Well, it’s over.
After occupying nine months of our sporting lives, spread over parts of two calendar years, the 2025-26 high school athletic calendar has flipped its final page.
As always, it was a memorable stretch on the Plateau as athletes, coaches, friends, fans and family watched both swarms of Hornets battle their way through the fall, winter and spring seasons.
Here’s a quick recap, noting some – likely not all – of the highlights provided by Enumclaw High and White River individuals and teams.
FALL SEASON
Both football teams to state: It was a stellar season for both White River and Enumclaw High, with both advancing to the 16-team Class 3A state playoffs.
Both suffered a first-round exit but that couldn’t diminish the following: White River continued a massive turnaround under third-year coach Wyatt Evenson by posting an undefeated 8-0 mark in North Puget Sound League 3A play, winning a league championship and eventually pushing its record to 10-0, something that hadn’t happened on the Buckley campus since 2004.
For Enumclaw, the fall season produced another season of success under the guidance of coach Mark Gunderson and his staff. The team finished second in the NPSL 3A standings with a 7-1 record, went 9-2 overall and made a state appearance for the fifth season in a row.
White River volleyball heads to Yakima: Toward the end of the fall season the White River volleyball team was the only Plateau program still standing, with the Hornet girls heading off to the Yakima SunDome and the Class 3A state tournament.
Enumclaw had advanced to the district tourney but fell short of advancing.
Two soccer teams to state: Both Plateau Hornets – those from White River and Enumclaw high schools – advanced to Round 2 of the Class 3A state tournament.
Both programs showed themselves to be the cream of the North Puget Sound League 3A crop. In their second season at the 3A level both stood head and shoulders above the rest of the nine-team league. White River finished the league season with a 15-1-0 record and Enumclaw was a step behind at 12-2-2.
Plateau swimmers head to state: Eight Plateau prep swimmers – four from Enumclaw High and an equal number from White River – were on hand November 14-15 for the all-classification state meet.
For White River, Haley Weisheyer swam in four events at state. She swam a pair of individual races and joined teammates Emma Hines, Grace Bergin and Peyton Wall for two relay events.
For Enumclaw, Alexandra Levesh qualified individually in two events and joined teammates Addisyn Sawyer, Molly Michael and Audrie Roddy for the 200-yard medley relay.
White River girls land in cross country Top 10: The Buckley girls placed 10th in the team standings during the Class 3A state meet.
The Hornets were anchored by a sixth-place performance by standout junior Paeton Poelman.
For Enumclaw, Lillian Haas ran her way to a state berth.
Enumclaw boys send full team to state cross country: Enumclaw High had qualified a full team for the state meet and placed 19th in the final Class 3A standings.
The Hornets were paced by junior Elliott Cheney.
Representing White River in the 3A meet were Cannon Ross and Mateo Anderson.
WINTER SEASON
White River girls off to state, again: As is often the case, the No. 1 highlight of the winter sports season was provided by the White River High girls basketball team.
The Hornets and their Hall of Fame coach Chris Gibson (who celebrated his 700th career victory during the season) wound up playing in the Tacoma Dome, site of the Class 3A state championships. That made White River one of just 12 Washington teams still standing.
For Enumclaw, both the boys and girls teams qualified for state play but each fell short of a Tacoma Dome trip.
WR girls third in flag football: The Buckley-based crew climbed the state ranks and, when the dust settled, were in possession of a third-place trophy during the inaugural Class 3A playoffs.
Buckley boys fifth at state wrestling: Competing in the Tacoma Dome the White River boys placed fifth in the 3A state standings. Individually, Josh Hanson advanced to the 157-pound finals.
Enumclaw had a pair of fourth-place finishers, Easton Bylin and Cole Schumacher.
Amanda Lillie earns state wrestling title: The White River junior topped the 3A girls field to claim No. 1 honors at 125 pounds.
Enumclaw’s Sydney Poe and Brookelyn Miller placed fifth in Tacoma.
Bellah advances to state swim: During his freshman campaign, Enumclaw High’s Liam Bellah earned a berth in the Class 3A championships. At the King County Aquatic Center he competed in both the 100-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle.
SPRING SEASON
Hernandez shines in equestrian: The Enumclaw High team brought home five first-place buckles and was responsible for two new state records during the state equestrian meet. The record-breaker was Gabriyela Hernandez who set new state marks in both the keyhole and individual flags events.
Fastpitch softball teams to state: Both Enumclaw and White River headed to Lacey’s Regional Athletic Complex for the Class 3A state tournament.
White River won its opener but was ousted after a pair of losses. The EHS crew dropped its opening game and was eliminated.
Baseball teams make it to state: Only 20 teams from around the state advanced to the Class 3A tournament and both Enumclaw and White River were in that select group.
Tennis players in state 3A tourney: On the girls side, White River’s Cydnee Chapin was again a state participant. Enumclaw’s doubles team of Haley Dumontet and Audrey Firnkoess also were in the state mix.
On the boys side, the EHS pair of William Stuenkel and King Gisa advanced to the Elite Eight in the state tourney.
Five golfers make state cut: After playing their regular season in the fall, Plateau golfers made state tourney appearances in the spring.
For the EHS boys, Wyatt Webb and Parker Cook survived the initial 18 holes and played on Day 2 in Spokane. For White River, Gavin Weber did the same.
On the girls side, advancing to the 3A tournament’s Day 2 were Kailey Jensen from White River and Taylor Puryear from Enumclaw.
Boys soccer teams land in district play: Soccer teams from both Plateau schools advanced to the District 3 tournament where they were ousted in “loser-out” rounds.
Both had posted winning records in league play. White River went 9-4-3 and EHS finished at 9-6-1.
Plateau represented at state track: Top track and field athletes from around the state gathered in Tacoma for the Class 3A state meet. Enumclaw’s Cole Olson was the top local participant, claiming third-place honors in the 400-meter run.
White River again takes powerlifting honors: The state’s powerlifting championships took place in early May and saw White River teams – both girls and boys – among the leaders.
The Hornet girls, sparked by individual champs Lilly Hyatt and Darbie Pearson, placed third in the final standings; the WRHS boys, headed by 165-pound champion Carson Kruger, landed in fifth place.
