The Pierce County Fire Marshal, in coordination with local fire chiefs, will elevate the burn ban to Stage 2 in unincorporated Pierce County, effective Monday, Aug. 17. Worsening dry conditions, ongoing drought, and increased wildfire risk across the region prompted the change.
Stage 2 prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated Pierce County. This includes recreational burn pits, backyard fire pits and fireplaces, land‑clearing
Barbecues that use gas, wood, or charcoal are still allowed when used safely on a non‑combustible surface.
“Moving to Stage 2 reflects the increasing wildfire risk we’re seeing across Pierce County,” said Pierce County Fire Marshal Ken Rice. “These restrictions can reduce preventable fires, but they only work when everyone does their part. By following the burn ban, residents help protect their neighbors and ensure emergency resources remain available when they’re needed most.”
Violations of the burn ban may result in citations and fines. If fire crews respond to an illegal fire, the responsible party may be billed for the full cost of emergency response, which can be significant given the resources required to protect life and property.
Residents of incorporated Pierce County cities and towns should contact their local jurisdiction for burn requirements.
