Forty-five horses, including four of last year’s winners, are nominated to Washington Cup XII, a series of six races for Washington-breds to be run Sunday, Sept. 7 at Emerald Downs.
The six stakes, worth $50,000 each, feature two races apiece for 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and older horses.
The $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, carded for 3-year-olds and up, could feature 2014 Longacres Mile champion Stryker Phd defending his title at 1 1/16 miles against the likes of Mike Man’s Gold, a triple stakes winner at Emerald Downs, and I Keep Saying, world record-holder at 6 ½ furlongs. Unbeaten in three starts this year for trainer Larry Ross and owners Jim and Mona Hour, Stryker Phd, scored an easy 3 ¼-length victory in the 2013 Tribal Classic
Last year’s 2-year-old winners*Noosito in the Daily Racing Form Dennis Dodge and Chu and You in the Northwest Farms*are nominated to the Chinook Pass for 3-year-old colts & geldings and Comcast SportsNet for 3-year-old fillies.
Madame Pele, winner of last year’s Comcast SportsNet, returns this year in the Pegasus Training Center for older fillies and mares. Her trainer, Jim Penney, is tied with Doris Harwood for most career WA Cup victories at seven apiece.
Trackattacker, undefeated in three starts including two stakes wins, will be heavily favored in the DRF Dennis Dodge. Among the top 2-year-olds in track history, the Harbor the Gold gelding has won three races by an aggregate 27 lengths including an 11-length romp ion the Emerald Express and a seven-furlong score in the WTBOA Lads. Owned by R.E.V. Racing and trained by Frank Lucarelli, Trackattacker features the same connections as Emerald Derby winner Mebossman, scheduled for a rematch with Noosito in the Chinook Pass Stakes.
The Northwest Farms could be the most wide-open race on the card. Barbara Shinpoch winner Pippa Bou Peep heads a list of 11 nominees to the race.
In the Comcast SportsNet for 3-year-old fillies, hard-running Mylast Sweet Pea and the very quick Chu and You give trainer Robbie Baze a strong one-two punch. Although winless in four stakes starts, Mylast Sweet Pea has compiled two seconds, a third and a fourth, including a runner-up finish in the Washington Oaks. A WA Cup victory could clinch a division title for the Grindstone filly.
Entries for Washington Cup XII races will be drawn Thursday morning at the Quarter Chute Café.
