Rain brings mud and rocks down Myers

The new year looks amazingly similar to the old year - rain and more rain.
Heavy rains totaling nearly 2 inches Jan. 2 caused a rock and mudslide on Myers Road between state Route 410 and 81st Street East.
Streams of water, mud and rocks were rolling down a bare, steep slope onto the road about 11 a.m. when Public Works employees and City Engineer John Woodcock arrived.
The road was closed until the staff could correct the problem.
According to Public Works Director Dan Grigsby, a concrete wall was constructed at the base of the slope and an erosion blanket was installed.
Woodcock ordered 400 square feet of a North West Green C350 erosion control blanket at a cost of about $1,400.
Grigsby said next spring the city will hydroseed the area.
“It's bare ground now and there was nothing to prevent erosion,” Grigsby said. “The heavy rains saturated the ground. We will have to determine later if we need some kind of a retaining wall. We'll try this fix first.”
The road was opened Friday after the blanket and concrete wall was constructed.
The road was temporarily closed again Monday after the weekend rainstorm so the staff could do more work on the site.
