The Sumner High cross country team competed well on the new 3-mile course at Auburn Mountainview Sept. 30 as the girls lost to Peninsula 28-29 but beat the host Lions 22-34.

The Sumner girls’ record improved to 3-1 despite their top runner, senior Stefani Castile, being out with the flu.

Senior Ashlee Sincraugh, who Sumner coach Kristin Martin says is running well and serving as a great example to the younger runners on the team, had a time of 19 minutes, 34 seconds to cross the finish line in second place.

Other Spartan girls were Gabby Phelps, finishing fourth with a time of 21:02 and junior teammate Leah Engelhardt, who finished sixth with a clocking of 21:26. Finishing 10th and 11th were Jackie Tomlin and Megan McDaniel with times of 22:02 and 22:20, respectively.

On the boys side, the Spartans were battling various illnesses as well and lost to both Auburn Mountainview and Peninsula, making their record 1-3.

Junior Jobe Layton finished seventh with a time of 17:03 and Reid Selmer was 10th with a time of 17:35. The next three Spartans to cross the finish line were Anthony Bertolucci, 14th at 18:08; Josh Goodsell, 17th, 18:13; and Josh Bacon, 19th, 19:12.

Sumner will try to stay in the thick of things when it visits Enumclaw’s 2.8 mile course at Nolte State Park-Deep Lake today, Wednesday), to take on the Hornets and the Lakes Lancers.
