The Sumner Spartans watched victory slip out of their hands Thursday night, falling 27-22 to Mount Tahoma.
The nonleague contest was played at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
After taking their first lead of the game, 15-14, on quarterback Aaron Clark’s one-yard touchdown run, Sumner watched as Mount Tahoma marched 88 yards in less than two minutes to score the winning touchdown on a 22-yard pass from Josh Lord to Mason Koester with 12 seconds left in the nonleague game.
The Thunderbirds, from the Class 4A Narrows League, took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Keonta Davis’s two-yard run.
Sumner blocked the point-after kick.
Zack Bower’s 25-yard field goal in the second cut the lead in half, 6-3, but the T-Birds scored on another Davis TD before the half.
Zach Williams scored on a fumble recovery for the Spartans in the third.
The Spartans had only 123 yards of offense, while MT rolled up 274.
Clark completed 6-of-15 passes for 49 yards and Zach Williams caught three passes for 18.
Defensively, Cody Haavik recorded 12 tackles and had 8 assists, while Tyler Salsbury had nine tackles and four assist.
Sumner will host Auburn Mountainview Friday in its Homecoming game.
