Despite giving it everything it had, Sumner High’s volleyball team could not overcome an experienced Enumclaw High squad in the Hornet Hive Tuesday evening as they went three and out losing 25-21, 25-14, 25-23.

“We just didn’t have the horses to stay with them,” contended Mike Fitzpatrick, head coach of a Sumner contingent that took fifth in the WIAA 3A state tournament in 2008.

“The kids were fighting back as best they could and kept their competitive edge through all three games, instead of just rolling over and dying. You just cannot do that when you are 1-7 overall….You have to keep on trying. We are a young team and the mental errors and hesitation have to go away before we will start winning games,” Fitzpatrick offered.

After Enumclaw won the first game with relative ease, the Hornets truly asserted themselves in the second game, which it quickly won, 25-14.

With its backs against the wall Sumner played with a renewed sense of urgency in the all important game three and led several times, before crumbling and being edged out 25-23.

The Spartans will now host Franklin Pierce Oct. 8 at 7:15 p.m. in the Sumner High gym.
