The Fife High volleyball squad took Sumner High’s glass slipper and shattered it into a thousand pieces Saturday at the West Central District tournament.

The state-qualifying action took place at Franklin Pierce High School.

The Spartan volleyball squad had waltzed into the district tournament, but the dream quickly turned into a nightmare and the match with Fife turned out to be the last action of the year for the Spartans.

In the initial set, Sumner fell 27-25. That first-set heartbreaker seemed to take the wind out of the Spartans’ sails as FHS cruised to an easy 25-15 second set win.

In the all-important third set, the Spartans seemed as if they might be in control, but Fife rallied to pound the final few nails into Sumner’s coffin, winning 26-24 and and denying the Spartans the opportunity to play in the state tourney.
