The Enumclaw High Hornets fell short in their attempt to make the Class 3A state soccer tournament, losing 1-0 Saturday to the Capital Cougars.
The bi-district game was played at Stadium Bowl in Tacoma.
A physical affair that saw a handful of yellow cards passed out, the game’s only goal came in the 46th minute when the Cougars’ Alyssa Edenstrom slipped a shot past EHS goalkeeper Caitlin Plese.
The teams were familiar with one another, having met in nonleague action in mid-September. Capital had the upper hand in that one as well, winning 3-2 on Enumclaw’s home turf.
The Hornets had started postseason play on a positive note, defeating Hazen 2-1 Nov. 3 in a subdistrict contest that was played at Burien’s Highline Stadium and was for district seeding purposes.
The victory was highlighted by goals from Lauren Cary and Kayla Bunderson.
The Hornets qualified for postseason play after capturing third place in the South Puget Sound League 3A.
