The spring sports season is roaring toward an exciting finale, with Enumclaw and White River athletes competing this week. Tracksters are in district action, the EHS fastball and baseball are in the early stages of the state tourney and others are leaping into season-ending events.
Here’s a look at where things stand for Hornets on both sides of the county line.
FASTPITCH
Enumclaw: With a league championship and a district title already tucked away, the Enumclaw High girls are set to embark on their biggest challenge to date.
The Hornets will travel to Lacey’s Regional Athletic Complex this week for the Class 3A state tournament. The three-day competition opens May 22, includes quarterfinal contests May 23 and wraps up Saturday, the 24th with semifinal games and the title tilt.
The venue is a familiar one for coach Quinn Haney and her Hornets, who won four straight contests at the RAC last week to secure the District 3/4 championship. Enumclaw opened tourney play with a 12-2 victory over Heritage High and an 11-1 triumph over Peninsula, both on May 15. On Saturday, the Hornets downed Timberline 3-1 in the semifinals and then topped Gig Harbor 8-3 to claim the district title.
Enumclaw begins state tourney play against an opponent that will be decided during an opening round contest between Auburn Mountainview and Hermiston (Oregon). The loser of that one is eliminated and the winner takes on Enumclaw at 9 a.m. Friday.
Enumclaw, seeded No. 3 into the state tourney, will play a second game Friday. The tournament is a double-elimination format.
White River: The Buckley crew needed one final victory to secure a spot in the Class 3A state fastpitch tournament, but it just wasn’t in the cards.
Playing for the third time on May 17, White River fell convincingly to Auburn Mountainview and saw the 2025 come to a close.
The District 3/4 tourney brought 16 teams to the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey, all chasing one of seven berths into the 3A state festivities. After splitting a pair of games on May 15 – an 11-6 victory over River Ridge followed by a 9-1 loss to top-seeded Prairie High – the Hornets needed two victories on Saturday to keep their season alive.
That’s where things fell short.
White River opened Saturday play with a 14-10 victory over Kentlake. Next came a winner-to-state pairing against Kelso, a game the Hornets dropped 8-1. In a final showdown, with the winner heading to the state tourney and the loser packing away its gear until next spring, the Hornets were thumped 16-5 by Mountainview.
Coach Brandon Walker and his crew finished the 2025 campaign with a 15-10 overall record. That included a 12-4 mark and third-place showing in North Puget Sound League 3A play.
BASEBALL
Enumclaw: By winning two of three games last week the Enumclaw High squad captured fifth-place honors in the District 3/4 baseball tournament. Most important, the No. 5 showing qualified the Hornets for the Class 3A state championships.
The 3A party gets started with four opening-round games on May 20. But Enumclaw, seeded No. 11, won’t take the diamond until the 24th, facing a Stanwood team that captured the tourney’s No. 6 seed. It is a loser-out contest.
Both teams will be traveling east of the mountains as the game is set for 1 p.m. at Roy Johnson Field in Kennewick.
If EHS prevails in its opener, the Hornets will play a second game on the 24th, another loser-out affair.
The tournament concludes with a pair of semifinal games on May 30 and the championship finale May 31, with all three contests set for Parker-Faller Field in Yakima.
Enumclaw’s trek through district play began May 13 with a 4-0 loss at the hands of North Thurston High. The following day brought an 11-9 victory over Bellarmine and, on May 17, EHS locked up its state berth with a 7-6 victory over Decatur.
White River: The District 3/4 tournament was a one-game affair for the White River Hornets, who fell 4-2 to Central Kitsap the afternoon of May 13.
The loser-out contest in Silverdale brought the Hornets’ 2025 season to an end. The squad finished with a final record of 10-11 including a 6-9 mark in North Puget Sound League 3A play.

GIRLS TENNIS
White River: The Hornets’ Cydnee Chapin will be making a return trip to the state tennis championships. The White River sophomore was a standout a year ago, placing sixth in the Class 2A ranks. Now, she’ll give it a shot at the 3A level.
Chapin earned her state berth during last week’s West Central District championships at the Boeing Employees Tennis Center in Kent. Needing a top-seven finish to advance, she placed sixth in the field.

State play is set for May 23-24 at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
BOYS SOCCER
White River: Scoring just one goal in two games meant the end of the line for the White River boys, who were ousted from the District 3/4 tournament.
