Man dies by suicide outside Enumclaw Chamber building

He was reported missing from Whidbey Island on Sept. 7.

The Enumclaw Police Department responded to a public suicide earlier this week near the Chamber of Commerce building.

According to a press release, the EPD received a call around 5:30 p.m. about a vehicle driving around in a flat tire near the Safeway.

The car had left before officers arrived, but a second call came in around 7 p.m. about the car being spotted again near the Chamber of Commerce building.

When officers arrived, the subject — a 54 year-old man — shot himself in the head. After backup and medical aid arrived, the man was pronounced dead.

“We are currently on the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the parking lot area of the Chamber of Commerce,” the EPD posted on Facebook at 7:27 p.m. “There is no threat or danger to the public, but please stay clear of this area as we conduct our investigation.”

The EPD said later that the man waswas reported missing from Whidbey Island earlier in the day. It remains unclear why the man came to Enumclaw, as “has no ties to our community from what we are told,” EPD Chief Tim Floyd said in an email.

The Courier-Herald does not usually report on suicides unless they’re public in nature.

The name of the man will not be published, as no crime was committed.
