Enumclaw adds New Years to approved firework launch days

But you won’t find any firework stands at QFC come winter.

Fans of fireworks are finally able to light up on New Years — legally, that is.

The Enumclaw City Council voted to allow fireworks to be set off the evening of Dec. 31 through the early morning of Jan. 1 during the Sept. 8 meeting.

In favor of the ordinance was Council member Corrie Coopman Franzier, Bobby Martines, Anthony Wright and Jan Martinell.

Council member Chris Gruner opposes, while Council members Chance LaFleur and Tom Sauvageau were absent.

In the past, Enumclaw only allowed fireworks on the Fourth of July, while neighboring city Buckley allows them for the start of the year. Black Diamond also only allows fireworks to be lit for Independence Day.

Community celebrations around holidays such as the Fourth of July and New Years’s can promote social cohesion and support community wellbeing,” the ordinance staff report reads. “Adding a narrow, clearly defined firework discharge window on December 31 and early morning January 1 balances tradition with impacts to public safety, pets and livestock, and the quiet enjoyment of our neighborhoods.”

The fireworks window is 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1.

However, the ordinance does not allow for firework stands to set up shop in Enumclaw in late December like in Buckley, so you may want to stock up when you can during the summer.

It is still illegal to set off fireworks any other time of the year; those caught doing so could be charged with a misdemeanor.
