Update: The article has been updated with additional information, including the estimated construction period and where senior center services will be moved.

Enumclaw’s Senior Center will soon receive some repairs and upgrades to the aging building.

The Enumclaw City Council awarded a bid to DM Pacific to work on the century-old structure during its April 13 meting.

The funds for the project partly come from a $485,000 U.S. Department of Commerce grant that the city was awarded in 2023.

The grant funds were originally going to be used to help fund the construction of a new community center downtown, complete with a new senior center, Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce and Arts Alive! space, a full gym, and classrooms and a commons area for community use and rent.

But the Enumclaw community rejected the bond measure that would have funded the $19.5 million project, with only 47.7% of ballots approving the proposition (the bond required a supermajority, or 60%, of ballots to pass).

The money is now being used for the upkeep of the senior center of not-insignificant scope.

Expected work includes select interior demolition, new flooring, a new ceiling, and some lighting replacements, among other modifications.

The senior center is expected to be closed between June through August, according to Allina Hibbs, the city’s Parks and Rec director.

Hibbs hopes to move senior center services and meals at the Enumclaw Veterans of Foreign Wars 1949 building on 244th Avenue during those three months.

DM Pacific bid nearly $391,000 for the project, with the city setting a budget of $800,000; an additional $315,000 was being funded by the city as matching grant funds.
