You can’t paint Enumclaw with a broad brush

Enumclaw is made up of many political mindsets and beliefs.

I was disappointed by Norm Arnold’s ‘Letter to the Editor’ (“Elfers’ views don’t reflect Enumclaw,” published Feb. 10) in which he characterized Enumclaw residents as primarily conservative; therefore, unable to tolerate any non-conservative point of view which Mr. Arnold went on to describe in ultra-conservative terms.

He was accusing Rich Elfers as being overly liberal, targeting conservative citizens. I disagree. I find Elfers’ arguments well thought-out and logical. I don’t always completely agree with his commentary; but, I find that he supports his arguments with cogent, thoughtful ideas – not extremist views.

It seems to be an unfortunate state of affairs these days that some people are so certain that a whole community can be labeled as single-minded and unable to consider a broader viewpoint. We all need to be more understanding and open to various reasonable thoughts. The awful insurrection at the Capitol certainly has shown us how out-of-kilter things can become when citizens only listen to one, narrow point of view.
