Culvert underneath Veazie Cumberland Road to be replaced

A King County Flood Control District will help improve fish habitat and reduce flood risks in the area.

Neuwakum Creek northeast of Enumclaw is going to be receiving a facelift in the near future.

The King County Flood Control District announced Oct. 11 more than $12.3 million in grants to tackle various flood reduction, drainage clearing, and fish culvert replacement projects around the county, just to name a few.

On the Plateau, a culvert that helps Newaukum Creek cross 248th Avenue SE (also known as Veazie Cumberland Road) will be replaced by “an appropriately sized stream channel crossing” that will help improve fish habitat and decrease flood risks.

The project was granted $335,000 on top of another $250,000 that was already dedicated by King County Parks and Recreation Department to cover the total $585,000 estimated cost.

The project is currently at 30% design and construction is hoped to start in the summer, according to the department; it’s unclear at this time if traffic could be impacted.
