Mayor’s Turkey Bowl collecting donations for local food bank

For the sixth year in a row, the annual Mayor’s Turkey Bowl will be played to help raise food and cash for the Bonney Lake Food Bank.

For the sixth year in a row, the annual Mayor’s Turkey Bowl will be played to help raise food and cash for the Bonney Lake Food Bank.

This year’s game is set for Nov. 25 at Panther Field on the Bonney High School campus. Game time is 7 p.m.

Mayor Neil Johnson said the game started in 2004 and this year’s flag football game will be two 35-minute halves with no time outs.

“It started out with just a bunch of soccer dads playing football,” Johnson said. “We have an unofficial official, so we’ll have someone to argue penalties with.”

At last year’s event, about 400 pounds of food were donated along with between $50 and $100 in cash donations.

“Each year we’ve been collecting more and more,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the food and cash will be presented to the food bank Dec. 5 during the city’s tree-lighting ceremony.

In the past, games were staged at Sunset Chev Stadium and played the morning of Thanksgiving.

But Johnson said the game was moved to the night before the holiday so it does not interfere with family time.

He said the public is invited to watch and make donations to the food bank.
