Lots of political news for Enumclaw last week. Rep. Chris Hurst announced he will no be seeking re-election in 2016, and Lane Walthers announced he will be running for the soon-to-be-vacant position. Bonney Lake had a busy week! The Bonney Lake baseball team took the league title against Sumner, and Sumner choir singers get excellent scores in the state competition. Also, Spartan senior Hashwinder Singh came back from Washington D.C. to tell us about the U.S. Senate Youth Program. In other school news, the Sumner School District will be providing Chromebooks for all students 6th through 12th grade to use both at school and home. Finally, get ready for the Presidential Primary, because ballots have been mailed out.

Warm air temperatures don’t translate to warm water temperatures. In fact, unseasonably warm weather will accelerate the typical Cascade Range spring snowmelt, and rivers will be running swift with icy cold runoff for weeks to come. Lakes and Puget Sound are also quite cold this time of year, and swimmers can suffer from cold-water shock after just a few minutes in the water.

King County Elections mailed ballots yesterday, May 4, to approximately 1.3 million registered voters for the May 24 Presidential Primary Election.
No one was injured in an early morning fire that damaged four units at an apartment complex in Sumner. Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue were called to the complex on the 7200 block of 142nd Avenue East at 7:12 a.m.
As one election ends, another beings. The Washington state Presidential Primary election officially started today, May 6, with ballots having been mailed out yesterday to Pierce County voters.
Lane Walthers and Chris Hurst have several key things in common: they share a background in public service and both identify themselves, politically, as Independent Democrats; additionally, both want to see their party maintain its slim advantage in the state House of Representatives.

The Sumner High School choir just wrapped up another successful year by sending two Spartans to state. Juniors Janelle Purser and Elly Mark both sang at the state solo and ensemble contest last weekend at Central Washington University. Purser and Mark sang together and separately. For their ensemble, they received an “excellent” rating.
