For the sixth year, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department will offer Healthy Youth Grants to all schools—up to $5,000 for schools and up to $10,000 for school districts. Yesterday Brandon Lee Farmer, 30, was sentenced to 407 months in prison for the 2006 shooting death of Velma Tirado, 45. In 2014, Tacoma Police Department cold-case detectives received a tip that led to Farmer’s arrest. Earlier this month, a jury convicted Farmer of murder in the first degree.
