Wolverines host three-day clinic

Wolverines host three-day clinic

Wolverine Football and Cheer will host its annual clinic Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Thunder Mountain Middle School.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of football and cheer and improve their skills. Saturday is a day of fun with competition for all levels with prizes and a barbecue.

This clinic is open to boys ages 7 to 14 and girls ages 7 to 15. The cost is $40. For information call 360-802-6411 or visit the Web site at www.wolverinejuniorfootball.com.

Plateau golfers tee off at districts

Ten Plateau area junior golfers teed off at the Washington Junior Golf Association’s District Six championships Monday and Tuesday at The Classic Golf Course in Spanaway, Wash. Results were not available at press time.

Enumclaw’s Torey Schreiner, Kelly Sweeney, Jordan Beals, Jake Erickson, Tyler Salsbury, David Smith, Jared Beals and Alexandra Dechon, Black Diamond’s Christopher Munko and Lindsey Douglas and Bonney Lake’s Curtis Koltermann were among those vying for a place at the state tournament July 29-31.

Prior to Monday’s tournament, golfers competed at Bookdale Golf Course July 15 where in the boys 16 to 17-year-old division, Munko finished in a tie for second at 71. Jordan Beals was right behind in fifth. Erickson also played.

Tyler Salsbury won the boys 14- to 15-year-old division with a 70. Smith also participated. Koltermann was second in the boys 8- to 11-year-old division. Jared Beals was one stroke behind for third.

In the girls 16 to 17 year olds, Sweeney finished third. Enumclaw’s Schreiner, Dechon, Kaylee Salsbury and Caitlin Runland and Bonney Lake’s Tracy Hare also played.

During play July 13 on a tough Rainier Country Club course, Munko placed third in his division. Erickson and Jordan Beals also played. Brooks Solberg and Steven Ireland of Lake Tapps and Kurt Kindsvater of Enumclaw and Teddy Sherwood of Buckley also participated.

Tyler Salsbury won his division with Smith placing third. Austin Spanier of Sumner, Kolton Tinney of Enumclaw and Brandon Barlow of Lake Tapps also played.

Jared Beals of Enumclaw played among the 8- to 11-year-olds.

Schreiner finished third in the older girls’ division. Douglas qualified for the district championship at Rainier Country Club. Others playing were Kaylee Salsbury, Dechon, Sweeney, Runland and Hare also played.

Teams tie for first in Lee golf play

Two teams tied for first and five teams tied for second Thursday during Lee golf action at the Enumclaw Golf Course.

Tying for first were the teams of Ed Feris, Matt Hall, Donna Nagel and Janet Winkel, and John Hiffman, Charlotte Dolezal, Don Spencer and Phillis Brown.

Mark Machin, Marry Kell, Mary Josie and Stan Fornalski were one of the five second-place teams. Frank Mihelich, Sharon Lovinger, Jim Chaisson and Betty French were another. Don Schnoor, Jean Winkel, Conrad Majack and Virginia Hessler made up another second-place team. Shawn Wetton, Lloyd Hipp, Donna Hall and Wanda Wilde also finished second. Doug Wilde, Larry Weygandt, Sharon Swift and Lou Ann DeLong were the final second-place team.

Four score crowns for Combat Sport

Casey Park, Mike Hundven, Aiden Carroll and Jackson McCann were first-place finishers July 11 at The Revolution Tournament at Bonney Lake High.

The four, along with five other teammates who placed, are students at Enumclaw’s Combat Sport and Fitness. They took part in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament, the largest submission grappling tournament in the Northwest, with more than 340 competitors.

The Revolution started in November 2006. This is one of three tournaments sponsored a year. Most of Combat Sport and Fitness’ students are begginers – white belts.

Park, 18, is a former Enumclaw High wrestler. He currently wrestles for Highline Community College and won the Gi division at The Revolution.

Enumclaw’s Hundven, 17, took first place in the junior Gi division.

Carroll, a 7-year-old Kibler Elementary School student, captured first place in the youth division and second place in the youth no Gi division.

McCann, also a 7-year-old Kibler Elementary student, won the first place youth no Gi division.

Matt Hundven, 28, of Enumclaw scored a second-place finish in the Gi division.

Enumclaw’s Dan Hundven, 15, was second in the junior Gi division.

Chase Hooper, 9, who attends Southwood Elementary School, picked up second-place finishes in both youth Gi and youth no Gi.

White River High graduate Tom Morgan of Carbonado finished third in the Gi division.

Katie Hooper, 11, an Enumclaw Middle School student, placed third in youth Gi division and youth no Gi.

Enumclaw’s Justin Harrington will battle in his second amateur mixed martial arts fight at 7 p.m. Saturday at Highline Community College. He will be joined by teammate and fellow Enumclaw resident Brian Fleming, who will be making his amateur debut.

Combat Sports and Fitness athlete Josh Calvo will make his professional debut Aug. 22 as Alliance Fights presents Counterstrike at The Showare Center in Kent. Doors open at 6 p.m., fights start at 7. He is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Combat Sport and Fitness plans to host its first MMA fights on the Plateau this fall. A date and time for this event is not yet available. Organizers said it will be an all-age, family-friendly show with a professional and amateur card.

MRFC 98 Blue brings home title

Mount Rainier Futbol Club (MRFC) 98 Blue brought home the championship of U11 Kent Cornacopuia Cup 2009. The team is comprised of boys living in Bonney Lake, Lake Tapps and Puyallup area. The team, also known as MRFC Heat is coached by Darin Mott and Chris Hamlett. In pool play, the team beat Westside 4-1, EFC 5-1, CSC Knights 6-0 and tied Crossfire 1-1. When they met Crossfire in the finals, the Blue brought home a 3-1 win for the title.
