Two sent to trauma center after head-on collision

A 48-year-old driver made a sudden U-turn and began traveling east in the westbound lane. Intoxicants are believed to be a factor in the accident, troopers say.

A head-on collision Tuesday night sent two drivers to the trauma center and closed the 24400 block of state Route 410 in both directions.

Washington State Patrol estimates the involved cars—a full-size pickup truck and a sedan without airbags—were traveling at 50 to 60 mph when they hit.

State patrol isolated the scene and East Pierce Fire and Rescue began the work of extricating both drivers. It took more than 30 minutes to remove the 23-year-old Buckley woman driving the sedan.

Investigators have been able to determine the 48-year-old man driving the pickup made a U-turn on the highway and began driving east in the westbound lanes.

Intoxicants may have played a role in the accident, troopers said.

Both drivers were taken to Tacoma General Hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
