Sumner High’s girls swim team left Fife swallowing chlorine after taking an Oct. 18 victory. The Spartans beat Fife 92-88.

Madison Munger achieved a state-qualifying time of 2 minutes, 5.58 seconds for the 200-yard freestyle.

Sami Hendricks placed first in the 50 freestyle and earned her best time of the year at 24.80.

McKenna Roberts placed second in diving with a 99.3 score.

“The gutsy swims came when Roberts and (Kallen) Gustafson turned around and swam as part of the 200 free relays,” Coach Dana Powers said. “(Alicia) Ditty, Roberts, Gustafson and (Elizabeth) Martin placed second with a 1:57.83.”

The meet was close at the end with a tenuous two point lead on Fife. What pushed the team over the edge was a fine showing by the 400 freestyle relay team. Munger, Gustafson, Ashley Huynh and Hendricks swam the race in 3:57.05 and made the cut for state competition.

The girls also defeated Steilacoom Thursday with a score of 113-66.
