Spartans prepare for Foss tourney

Like most wrestling squads in the South Puget Sound League 3A, Sumner High had to postpone its lone dual meet match last week, slated for Dec. 17 at Franklin Pierce High.

Additionally the Spartan grapplers were to participate in Pasco’s Best of the West gala Friday and Saturday, but those plans also were dashed as pass conditions were far too hazardous to consider making the odyssey east of the Cascades.

“It is what it is,” Sumner mat mentor Jeremy Horsley said. “Most of last weekend’s tournaments didn’t have many participants due to the rotten weather.”

The Spartan’s only match on the holiday docket will be Saturday when they head to Tacoma to participate in the Foss High Invitational.

“At least that will be something to keep us in wrestling shape until early January, when the league season starts up again,” said Horsley, whose team is still searching for its first triumph at 0-2. Sumner’s Tyler Wooding (125 pounds), Colby Grant (171) and Keiffer Comstock (215) are all undefeated in SPSL 3A dual meet action.

The Spartans will make up the match at Franklin Pierce at 7 p.m. Jan. 15.
