Paul and Ethel Nachtigal

Paul E. Nachtigal and Ethel Mae Nachtigal, 21-year residents of the area, died June 29, 2011, and July 7, 2011, respectively.

They were married Sept. 24, 1947.

He was born Feb. 20, 1924, in McPherson County, Kan., to Henry and Marie (Ediger) Nachtigal. He worked as a self-employed contractor, retiring in 1994, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, most outdoor adventures and growing dahlias.

She was born Oct. 24, 1923, in Greensburg, Kan., to Arthur J. and Bertha (Schmidt) Peaster and was later adopted by stepmother Margaret Peaster. She graduated in June 1947 from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Newton, Kan., and worked as a nurse. She enjoyed her garden and making special pies for children and grandchildren.

Both were members of the Seattle Mennonite Church.

Together they are survived by daughters Patty Osthus of Auburn, Wash., and Sandra Masters of Kingston, Wash.; sons Paul Nachtigal Jr. of Grand Coulee, Wash., and Donald Nachtigal of Yakima, Wash.; and many grandchildren.

They were preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen.

Additionally, he was survived by sisters Wanda E. Claassen of Newton, Kan., and Ruth D. Carter of Nixa, Mo. He was preceded in death by brothers Frank E. Nachtigal, Henry Nachtigal, Dan Nachtigal and Richard Nachtigal, and a sister, Tillie E. Schmidt. She is survived by brother Harlow Peaster of Wilmore, Kan., and was preceded in death by sisters Vida Jantz and Omagene “Jeanie” Grant.

An open house for family and friends is planned for Saturday, July 30, at the family home in Enumclaw.
