Sumner receives funding for projects

Sumner recently received federal funding for two street projects.
The Pierce County Regional Council, which has the task of dispersing federal stimulus funds to local cities and towns allocated money for Sumner two projects.
One project is the Traffic and Main intersection. Sumner received $2,118,593.
Out of the 15 projects at the last PCRC meeting, this was the second highest amount of money awarded.
“Not bad for a little town,” Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow said.
Sumner also received $130,000 for the East Valley Highway Resurfacing. This will pay to complete the design and environmental phases of the project, and this project remains high on the contingency list for further funding if more becomes available.
Council also passed a resolution to submit to the Pierce County Regional Council and Pierce County staff a revised draft of Sumner’s Manufacturing/Industrial Center (MIC) plan for review.
Councilmember Matthew Richardson voted against the resolution, stating the MIC designation does not match Sumner’s image as a small town.
The council is continuing to explore the possibility of designating the Sumner-Pacific Industrial Area as MIC because the city would be eligible for more grants.
The submission does not put into place any designation, but is the next step in the process.
