The Sumner High fastpitch team won two out of its first three games, beating Yelm 7-5 before taking North Thurston 8-1.

But the only loss last week came Friday under the lights in Enumclaw, when the Spartans were edged 1-0 in their initial South Puget Sound League 3A game of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor McCarthy allowed just three hits against Enumclaw and walked none. McCarthy is a threat with a bat as well; in 10 trips to the plate she has been successful eight times.

Allie Sims shares the slinging duties. In her one outing thus far, she went seven innings against North Thurston and allowed five hits, three free passes and beaned two batters, but didn’t allow any earned runs. In that clash with the Rams, Spartan senior Krysta Beers showed some great glove skills as she backed her young pitcher well with 10 defensive put outs from her shortstop position.
