The Sumner High Spartans are taking their lumps, the latest a 4-1 loss to Enumclaw, but coach Chris Heacox said the ladies are playing top tennis and Thursday’s 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce was a move in the right direction.

“We’ve been in a rough streak with four straight losses, but the girls have been making good progress and we’re playing our best tennis of the year,” Heacox said. “We’ve just been playing some of the tough teams in our league. Hopefully (Thursday’s) win will help spur us on to a good finish.”

Emily Gonzales’ 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles was a coup.

“She’s really starting to adjust well to singles play after playing three years of doubles,” Heacox said.

The Spartans also picked up a pair of doubles wins. Brittany Skirm and Jasmine Babcock won 6-0, 7-5, while Kelli Latta and Kally Bieber scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Gonzales picked up the lone win against Enumclaw April 20.
