Sumner High swimmers set three West Central District 2A meet records Thursday and Friday at Hazen High.

What more could a coach ask for, Dana Powers posed.

“We have state left,” she answered. And she promised a lot more incredible swims and informed Spartan fans they haven’t seen anything yet.

The Spartans will take sevento state. Preliminaries are scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way with finals set for 1:45 p.m. Friday. The Spartans finished 10th last year as a Class 3A team.

The Spartans finished second 23 points behind Interlake during the recent WCD meet at Hazen.

Sami Hendricks set the pace Thursday night during preliminary competition with a meet-record 24.97-second finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Friday, the Spartan junior won the finals with a time of 25.24.

Hendricks also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 55:42.

Freshman Madison Munger sprinted to a meet record and first-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.93. She also won the 200 individual medley with a state time of 2:15.89.

Munger and Hendricks teamed with Ashley Huynh and Emma Thompson to set a meet record in the 200 freestyle relay with a blistering 1:45.25.

The foursome also finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.36.

Huynh, a sophomore, will also make the trip to state after in the 100 breaststroke after a close finish. Huynh took second in 1:13.08.

Thompson finished second in the 100 backstroke for a spot at state. In another close race, the senior who posted a 1:05.63 finished .17 second behind Maddie Hagen of Interlake. She also earned a spot in the 100 butterfly after a sixth-place finish.

The Spartans will also take its 400 freestyle relay, which finished third. Elizabeth Martin, Kallan Gustafson, Alicia Ditty and Thompson raced to a 4:01.38 time.

A handful of Sumner swimmers earned a spot at state through the allocation system after the district meet.

Huynh and Gustafson finished fifth and seventh respectively in the 200 freestyle for a spot at the state meet. Gustafson raced her best 500 freestyle of the season and slipped into the No. 7 spot and a state allocation.

Ditty earned a spot with her seventh-place 200 IM finish and a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Martin will go after a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

In the water, senior Katie Ekse dropped three second off her best time with a 1:19.66 preliminary time in the 100 breaststroke. Out of the pool, the International Baccalaureate student at Sumner High, earned academic recognition for her 3.75 grade-point average.
