Springtime sports action is definitely heating up with postseason play beginning this week and season-ending state competition rapidly approaching.

Here’s a quick look at where things stand for Plateau athletes and teams as all head into the season’s home stretch.

FASTPITCH SOFTBALL

The Plateau pair of Hornets will head to familiar turf this week, having qualified for the District 3 tournament that will play out over the course of two days.

The White River team goes to the district tournament in a strong position with a league record of 15-1.

The Friday and Saturday (May 15-16) action takes place at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. The tourney begins with a dozen hopefuls and will advance the top six finishers to the Class 3A state championships.

The state festivities take place May 21-23 at the same site, the RAC in Thurston County.

The tournament bracket can be found at www.wpanetwork.com/wiaa/brackets/tournament.php. Click the desired level (District 3 or state), click “fastpitch softball” and select “Class 3A.”

GIRLS TENNIS

The West Central District tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, May 15-16, and will be staged at the Boeing Employees Tennis Center in Kent. The tourney will send the top six finishers to the 3A state championships, scheduled for May 22-23 at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

Here’s where players from the Plateau stand.

Enumclaw: A pair of doubles teams, each hoping to land a berth in the Class 3A state tourney, will represent the EHS program at this week’s district tournament.

They advanced during the league tourney, played at Kent-Meridian High School on May 2 and May 4.

Cruising to the league finals and grabbing the No. 2 seed was the team of Audrey Firnkoess and Haley Dumontet. Reaching the semifinals and claiming the No. 4 doubles seed were Autumn Vogel and Ashley Diaz.

The Dumontet/Firnkoess pairing is tournament-tested, having advanced deep into last year’s WCD tourney. They fell just one victory shy of making a state appearance.

White River: Singles standout Cydnee Chapin battled her way to the league tourney championship and, with it, the No. 1 seed into this week’s WCD action. After receiving a first-round bye, Chapin won five straight matches to emerge as No. 1.

Teammate Alexandra Dinger fell a victory shy of moving on to WCD action. Starting with a bye, she split four matches to jump into the league semifinals. Taking a loss to end her tourney experience she is now the No. 1 alternate to district play.

BASEBALL

This week’s District 3 tournament kicked off with a 12-team field and, when the dust settles Saturday afternoon there will be six squads heading into Class 3A state play.

Both Plateau teams began district action May 12 with loser-out games, White River against Central Kitsap and Enumclaw facing Capital High. The first-round winners play again today (Wednesday).

If Enumclaw advances to today’s second round the game will be against Peninsula High at Sehmel Park in Gig Harbor; if White River advances the second-round contest will be against Decatur High, played on the campus of Thomas Jefferson High School.

The district tourney wraps up Saturday, May 16, on the diamond at Auburn High School with the top six advancing to state.

BOYS SOCCER

Squads from White River and Enumclaw launched their postseason journeys Saturday afternoon during the first round of the District 3 tournament.

The tourney features a dozen teams and will send the top six to the Class 3A state tournament.

Here’s the current playoff picture for both Plateau teams.

Enumclaw: Day 1 of district had the EHS squad winning in exciting fashion, prevailing in a shootout over Central Kitsap.

The Hornets were on top 1-0 (thanks to a Zane Wirkkala goal at 22 minutes) until the game’s final minutes when the Kitsap bunch cracked the scoreboard.

The victory came on a 3-2 advantage during the shootout; capitalizing on their attempts were Junior Gorobets, Amir Javanmiri and Caleb Stutzman.

The victory pushed the No. 11-seeded Hornets into a May 12 contest against No. 3 Auburn Mountainview.

The winner of that Tuesday game was assured of a place in the state tourney and a May 14 semifinal contest. The loser also plays on the 14th, taking on North Thurston in a loser-out affair.

White River: The Buckley crew got off to a rough district start on Saturday, losing at home 3-1 to Timberline High. Next up for White River is a May 14, loser-out game at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma. The Hornets will face either Bellarmine or Decatur; those two squared off Tuesday evening.

GOLF

After a long layoff from formal competition, Plateau golfers returned to the links earlier this week for the West Central District qualifier.

Competition took place Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12, at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard (boys) and Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma (girls).

At stake were team and individual entries into the Class 3A state championships. The district will send five full teams and an additional 10 placers to state.

High school golf is a fall sport in Western Washington, with state qualifying and subsequent state tournaments delayed until the spring.

In the Class 3A ranks, the May 19-20 state tournament takes place on the eastern edge of Washington. The boys will compete at the Indian Canyon course in Spokane while the girls tee off at Deer Park Golf Club, a bit north of Spokane.

Enumclaw boys: At the West Central District tourney, EHS was represented by the team of Wyatt Webb, Travis Leonard, Parker Cook, Taelon Van Dam and Henry Bort. In addition, Sawyer Mowbray will be playing as an individual qualifier.

White River boys: Competing at McCormick Woods this week were Jonah Wright, Gavin Weber, Wes Ebbert, Zach Wisdom and Vaughn Porter.

Enumclaw girls: Teeing off earlier this week at Allenmore were Taylor Puryear, Kennedy Francis, Emma Fardig, Jaelynn Martinez and Lucy Thomas.

White River girls: The White River girls competing in the WCD tourney were Kailey Jensen, Noelle Wright, Tatum Weber, Peyton Hunter and Charlotte Ringel. Additionally, Adelynn Valenta took part as an individual qualifier.

TRACK & FIELD

With the regular season concluded, the Plateau’s prep runners, throwers, jumpers and vaulters will focus on meets that decide the best of the best.

The process begins this week (Wednesday and Friday) with the North Puget Sound League championships at Kent-Meridian High School. The meet will send the top seven finishers in each event to the District 3/4 championships, scheduled for May 20 and 22, also at Kent-Meridian. The district meet advances the top six in each event.

The season then culminates with the state championships, May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The huge meet brings together athletes from the Class 2A, 3A and 4A ranks, from all corners of the state.
