Sumner’s girls swim and dive team took fifth place at the WIAA State 2A tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The 200-yard Medley Relay team of Alicia Ditty, Ashley Huynh, Madison Munger, and Kallan Gustafson took home the state championship in their event. Their time of 1 minute, 53.56 seconds set a Sumner High School record. The team took fourth place in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a 1:44.07 time.

Munger took second place in the 200 Individual Medley with a 2:10.24, and third place in the 100 Butterfly with a 59.66.

Huynh took third place in the 100 Breaststroke, finishing in 1:08.85. She placed eighth in the 200 Individual Medley with a 2:20.49 time.

Ditty took 12th place in the 200 Individual Medley, running a 2:24.41 time. A false start in the 100 Backstroke disqualified her from placing in the event, though her time was promising, coach Dana Powers said.

Gustafson took 15th place in the 200 Freestyle race, swimming 2:11.30.

“Kallan had less than five minutes to prepare for the 200 Free as she swam the last leg of the (200 Medley) relay and the consolation finals in the 200 Free,” Powers wrote in a team recap sent Sunday.

Gustafson placed 14th in the 500 Freestyle.

The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Petria Russell, Katie Korbuszewski, McKenna Roberts and Iliana Kaiser swam their race in 4:23.48, earning them 24th place.

The 2012 state tournament marked a bittersweet milestone for Coach Powers, who is sending off the first swim team seniors she’s coached for all four years of their high school career. Ashleigh Johnson, Roberts, Gustafson and Huynh all graduate at the end of the 2012-2013 school year.
