White River, Enumclaw teams heading to state

Heading into the final days of the spring sports campaign, individual athletes and teams from both Enumclaw High and White River find themselves in the thick of the postseason action.
Some will see their seasons come to a close during state-level competition this week while others punch their tickets to the state’s Class 3A festivities. And some will find their seasons cut short during the postseason process that advances the best and eliminates the others.
Here’s a look at where things stand for the swarms of Hornets on both sides of the county line.
BASEBALL
The teams from Enumclaw and White River share a few things in common as the Class 3A state tournament kicks off: both survived district play to earn a state berth, each began state play yesterday (Tuesday), both were on the road and both started with a loser-out contest.
Enumclaw entered the 20-team state tourney as the No. 18 seed and headed to No. 15 Monroe High School for a 6:30 p.m. contest. If the Hornets were victorious they will cross the Cascades for a Saturday morning contest against the home-field squad from Kennewick High.
Enumclaw qualified for state by winning two of three games during last week’s District 3 tournament, sharing fifth-place honors.
White River is seeded No. 18 in the state tourney and opened at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a game at Liberty High. If White River won, the Hornets will next play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Gig Harbor. The contest is slated for the diamond at Tacoma’s Lincoln High.
The Buckley squad opened last week’s District 3 tourney with a victory over Central Kitsap, suffered a loss to Decatur and qualified for state with a victory over Bellarmine.
FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
The state’s top 16 fastpitch teams will gather this week at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey, eventually deciding who takes home hardware in the Class 3A ranks.
The tourney opens Thursday afternoon and concludes with a championship tilt Saturday.
White River enters as the No. 13 seed and opens at 3 p.m. Thursday (Field 4) against No. 20 Seattle Prep. The loser is eliminated while the winner advances to Friday play, taking on Roosevelt High at 11 a.m.
White River earned its state berth during last week’s District 3 tourney. The Hornets entered as the No. 3 seed, earning a first-round bye. After defeating Gig Harbor and losing to eventual champion Peninsula High, White River took third-place tournament honors.
Enumclaw steps onto Field 3 at 3 p.m. Thursday as the tourney’s No. 17 seed, taking on No. 16 Shorewood High in a loser-out affair. The winner returns Friday for an 11 a.m. game against Sedro-Woolley.
Enumclaw qualified for state tourney play during last week’s District 3 tournament. The Hornets won three of four tourney games, sharing fifth-place honors.
GIRLS TENNIS
The Vancouver Tennis Center will welcome the state’s top singles players and doubles teams for two days of top-notch action, with athletes from around Washington competing for Class 3A state honors.
The 3A tourney kicks off Friday, May 22, and comes to an end with trophy matches the following day.
White River will again be represented at the state tournament by Cydnee Chapin, who has made a habit of postseason play.
Singles competition begins with a 20-player field and Chapin opens Friday morning with a loser-out match. A victory advances her to the second round and would put her into double-elimination territory.
Chapin earned her state trip during last week’s West Central District tournament, winning three of four matches to claim the district’s No. 5 seed to state.
Enumclaw will be featured in doubles play during this week’s Class 3A state tournament, as the pair of Haley Dumontet and Audrey Firnkoess qualified for the festivities at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
Their state journey begins Friday morning with a loser-out match. A victory would advance them into Round 2 play and into double-elimination territory.
BOYS TENNIS
Boys tennis features a split calendar, with the regular season contested in the fall and state competition in the spring.
Among the Plateau boys the lone survivors of the fall competition were the Enumclaw doubles pair of William Stuenkel and King Gisa.
They will challenge the best the state has to offer during the May 22-23 Class 3A tourney, staged in Clark County at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
BOYS GOLF
Both Plateau schools will be represented when the Class 3A boys state tournament tees off in Spokane.
The full Enumclaw squad will be present, along with a pair of individual qualifiers from White River. Their tourney takes place May 19-20 at Indian Canyon Golf Course.
The state golfers earned their berths during last week’s West Central District qualifier at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard. The EHS boys placed third in a field of 10 teams (the top five advanced to state).
Enumclaw was paced by junior Wyatt Webb who shot a round of 78 on Day 1 of the WCD tourney and improved to 76 on Day 2, leaving him with a 36-hole total of 154. Others making up the state-qualifying team were senior Parker Cook, 80-77-157; senior Taelon Van Dam, 74-84-158; senior Travis Leonard 83-79-162; and senior Henry Bort 85-80-165.

White River landed No. 6 in the WCD team standings, falling one berth shy of a state trip.
On the positive side, senior Jonah Wright and junior Gavin Weber secured trips to Spokane. Wright totaled 149 for the two days (74-75) and Weber totaled 160 (79-81). Other district participants for White River were sophomore Wes Ebbert, 81-82-163; sophomore Cutter Laramore, 82-83-165; senior Vaughn Porter, 88-82-170; and senior Zach Wisdom, 89-85-174.
GIRLS GOLF
Girls from both Enumclaw and White River will tackle Deer Park Golf Course this week as part of the Class 3A state girls tournament. The Deer Park layout is just a bit north of Spokane.
The state-bound golfers earned their berths during last week’s West Central District qualifier at Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma.
White River placed seventh in the WCD team standings and will have two representatives playing in this week’s state tourney.
Moving on to state competition are the Hornets’ Kailey Jensen and Noelle Wright. During last week’s district tourney Jensen, a sophomore, finished in eighth place with a two-round score of 163 (83-80). Wright, a freshman, shot a combined 193 (98-95) to land in 31st place.
Teammates who also participated in the district tourney were freshman Tatum Weber who placed 38th (107-96-203); freshman Peyton Hunter who finished 51st (110-123-233); and junior Charlotte Ringel who placed 55th (122-121-243).
Additionally, White River’s Adelynn Valenta had qualified for district play as an individual. Another member of the freshman class, she was 39th overall with a two-day score of 205 (104-101).
Enumclaw senior Taylor Puryear will be representing her school this week in Eastern Washington, having secured a berth in the Class 3A state tournament. She posted a 36-hole total of 184 during last week’s district qualifying.
She is the lone Hornet still playing, as the EHS team placed eighth in a field where only the top five advanced from district play.
Other Enumclaw High girls taking part in the West Central District tourney were: Emma Fardig, who totaled 213 for her two district rounds; Jaelynn Martinez, 214; Kennedy Francis, 215; and Lucy Thomas, 229. All four are juniors.

The evening of May 14 saw both Plateau teams fall in “loser out” contests. The No. 7-seeded White River bunch fell 6-3 to No. 4 Decatur High on the pitch at Mount Tahoma High while No. 11 Enumclaw lost 2-0 to No. 8 North Thurston at Roy Anderson Field in Gig Harbor.
Coach Lee Sinkovic and his White River squad opened district play on May 9 with a 3-1, home field loss to Timberline High. On the Enumclaw side, coach Shawn Tobius and his crew defeated Central Kitsap in a May 9 shootout before losing to Auburn Mountainview on May 12.
The district losses meant the end of the line for the cross-river rivals. White River had finished the North Puget Sound League 3A season with a 9-4-3 record and a fourth-place finish. Enumclaw went 9-6-1 in league play, finishing fifth.
