Enumclaw and White River school boards gave their respective superintendents the thumbs up and added another year to their contracts. But, as both districts are faced with millions of dollars in budget reductions, neither will receive a pay increase.

Both Enumclaw School District Superintendent Mike Nelson and White River School District Superintendent Tom Lockyer received one-year renewals. In addition to pay increases, the two leaders also gave up other incentives, much like teachers and those in leadership positions, to help their districts save money.

The Enumclaw School Board evaluated Nelson at its May 11 regular meeting. White River’s school board met April 22 to evaluate Lockyer.

“He’s doing a great job,” Enumclaw School Board President Cathy Dahlquist said of Nelson, who after years as Enumclaw’s assistant superintendent moved to the helm in 2007.

“We’re very satisfied with the job he’s doing,” White River School Board President Denise Vogel said of Lockyer, who stepped into the position in 2005. “We’re happy with the direction he’s taking the district.

“It’s been a tough year. We appreciate the leadership he’s shown with his cabinet and the other leaders in the district.”
