Final preparations under way for Relay for Life

The Sumner/Bonney Lake edition Relay For Life takes place Friday and Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Relay For Life, an event of the American Cancer Society, is a celebration of survivors, a remembrance of people who lost the fight against cancer and a chance to fight against the disease.

The community is invited to join family, friends, neighbors and coworkers in this event, which together with millions across the country supports the American Cancer Society and the effort to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. Relay for Life’s local event also helps fund the services the society provides in Pierce County.

The event begins with a survivors lap around the track, in which cancer survivors walk the track together. Once it’s dark, the luminaria ceremony honors and remembers people who lost their fight with cancer and people whose lives are affected by cancer. Candles are placed inside paper bags filled with sand, and on each bag is written the name of a person affected by cancer.

Registration begins at 4 p.m. at Sunset Chev Stadium, followed by a survivors reception. The survivors lap is at 6 p.m. and the event continues with various activities throughout the night and into the next day, concluding at noon on Saturday.
