A Bonney Lake High School student was arrested Wednesday after bringing a large knife to school.
No one was injured in the incident and there were no threats made. The student, a 14-year-old male, was also emergency expelled following the events.
According to the police report, the incident began when a student walked through the scanners in the library and the alarm sounded. The scanners are designed to detect books improperly removed from the library, but also detect metal.
The school librarian called the student back into the library to search his bag and he quickly passed to another student a folded shirt. No library books were found in the bag and the librarian called back the second student because of the passed shirt. The search revealed a large knife in a side pocket and both students were taken to the main office.
The knife is described as having a 4-inch blade and wooden handle and was secured in a sheath.
At approximately 1:35 p.m. the school resource officer was called in to the principal’s office where the two students were waiting. A third student was held in another office.
The officer read the first student his rights, including the juvenile warning and the student waived his rights and admitted he brought the knife to school and was initially in possession of it.
The student said he brought it because he agreed to trade the knife to the third student in exchange for hacky sack. He said he had the knife in his bag when the alarm went off and passed it to the second student so he would not get in trouble. He told police the knife was wrapped in the shirt and the second student had no idea he had been handed a knife.
He also said he was sorry and that he knew it was illegal to bring the knife.
While speaking to the officer, the second student confirmed everything the first student said and was “adamant” about not knowing of the knife and was surprised when the librarian found it.
The third student admitted to the trade, but said he told the first student it was not a good idea to bring a knife to school and was unaware the first student had done so.
The student who initially brought the knife to school was emergency expelled and released to his parents. The case was forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor for possession of a dangerous weapon on school facilities charges.
