The Sumner High wrestling crew was one point shy of winning its first dual match of the season Thursday at Clover Park, dropping a close battle to the Warriors 37-36.
“A couple of guys that we were counting on to get wins for us didn’t wrestle well, suffering first-round pins, and that was the difference,” Spartan coach Jeremy Horsley said.
Horsley had praise for 103-pound freshman Zach Wooding, who pinned his Warrior foe in 30 seconds, 145-pounder Tyler Hidalgo who claimed a 14-2 major decision over his challenger and heavyweight Cody Elliot who pinned his foe.
Earlier in the week the Spartans hosted an improved Auburn Mountainview crew and fell 56-28.
Sumner hosts Enumclaw High, which is unbeaten in SPSL 3A dual-match action, at 7 tonight, Wednesday. Enumclaw has won the state Class 3A title the past two seasons.
