With four games under their belts and four victories in the record books the early-season story is a happy one indeed for the Plateau’s pair of football teams.
Both Enumclaw and White River moved to 2-0 last week, posting resounding victories nearly 48 hours apart. With an ongoing shortage of game officials, White River took to their home turf Thursday night while Enumclaw waited until Saturday afternoon to charge onto Federal Way Memorial Field.
The neighboring schools will look to keep the good times rolling this week with games against North Puget Sound League 3A foes. This time, it will be Enumclaw playing Thursday September 18, hosting Kentlake at the Expo Center; White River will play a traditional Friday night game, taking on Auburn Mountainview at Auburn Memorial Stadium. Both contests have a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Here’s how the Plateau pair remained undefeated last week.
ENUMCLAW
Enumclaw scored. Then scored some more. And kept reaching the end zone until Saturday’s game mercifully came to a close.
When it was over the scoreboard showed the Hornets with a crushing 75-0 decision over the Todd Beamer bunch.
When a team posts that many touchdowns it’s hard to point to a single play. But one that stood out against the Titans was delivered by Enumclaw’s Kolt Kuzaro who intercepted a pass and returned it 85 yards for a score.
WHITE RIVER
What a difference a year makes.
Rewind to Week 2 of the 2024 season when White River made the nonleague trek to Fife only to be trounced 48-0 by the host Trojans.
Now, fast forward to Week 2 of the current campaign and one finds a much different outcome – a much more rewarding payoff for the Hornets, who thumped the Fife bunch 48-10.
“We had that game circled for 364 days after last year’s embarrassing loss,” Hornet coach Wyatt Evenson said.
It was a Thursday night affair on the turf of Arrow Lumber Stadium where White River improved to 2-0 in the third season under Evenson.
While the Class 2A visitors couldn’t post a touchdown until the final quarter, the Hornets – who have now put 89 points on the board in two contests – scored early and often.
White River ran for just 63 yards against Fife but made the most of their 20 rushing attempts. Blake Bargelt found the end zone three times, once in the first quarter and twice in the second as the Hornets built a 20-3 halftime lead.
The third period opened with a short TD run by Mason Locke and a 64-yard scoring strike from Chaz Strickland to a wide-open Ray Palmer. The final quarter saw the Hornets scoring on a TD connection from Strickland to Parker Fry and a fumble return by Cooper Wittgow.
Strickland again posted outstanding numbers, completing 24 of 28 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
