With three more games to play against Washington, Bonney Lake and Eatonville, all on the road next week prior to the taxing gamut of holiday tournaments, there was no place like home for the White River boys basketball squad last night, as it evened up its SPSL 2A mark at 1-1 by throttling Steilacoom at The Hive 59-40.
Wednesday’s gymnastics meet in Federal Way wasn’t particularly kind to the girls from Sumner and Bonney Lake high schools, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in a four-team meet.
The powerhouse Enumclaw High gymnastics squad topped a four-team field Wednesday night, scoring an impressive 173.55 team points.
In the battle between the two top Class 3A wrestling teams in the state, Enumclaw retained its status as No. 1 Wednesday night with a 39-36 victory over Bonney Lake.
The defending 3A champion Hornets threw everything but the kitchen sink at the No. 2-ranked Panthers and the Panthers returned the favor in the South Puget Sound League 3A season opener.
The White River High girls had little trouble winning their South Puget Sound League 2A season opener Tuesday night, whipping the outmatched Clover Park Warriors 65-23.
Enumclaw High’s boys swim team dropped a 130-67 nonleague meet to Stadium Tuesday in Tacoma.
The Hornets pulled off wins in the 200-yard medley relay, diving, the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
The medley relay of Thomas Petersen, Bennon VanHoof, Gabe Sales and Will Cooper won with a time of 1 minute, 45.12 seconds.
Jesse Skipworth won the diving with 205.20 points.
Cooper raced to the butterfly victory with a time of 58.71.
Petersen won the backstroke in 57.92, while VanHoof captured the breaststroke in 1:02.42.
Sumner High School’s boys swim and dive team defeated Clover Park 103-78 in the first home meet of the season Dec. 1. The team got an early jump on winter, with four swimmers’ times qualifying for district competition.
With three Hornets sidelined, the Enumclaw High girls wrestling team proved it has some depth as three earned third-place finishes at the Yelm tournament Saturday.
An added bonus, the Lady Hornets earned two wins by technical fall. Coach Jerry Scheidt said in its five-year history, the team has posted five technical falls.
“That just shows how far we’ve come,” Scheidt said.
Danielle Cormier, 155 pounds, Logan Erskine, 170, and KC Lynn Moulden, 275, were the Hornets’ third-place winners. Kasandra Renfrow finished fifth at 170 pounds.
Sumner High won its wrestling Invitational Saturday, while Bonney Lake High finished second at the White River Classic wrestling tournament in Buckley.
With three champions, a runner-up and enough depth to produce a bevy of medal winners, Enumclaw High carried away the big trophy at Saturday’s White River Classic wrestling tournament.
The Hornets topped some of the toughest 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A teams in the state with 212 points. Despite putting five wrestlers in the finals, South Puget Sound League 3A rival Bonney Lake didn’t produce a winner and finished second with 169 points.
Enumclaw and Bonney Lake square off Wednesday night on the Panthers’ home mat in the SPSL 3A season opener. The Hornets will put its 37-match league win streak on the line in the 7 p.m. contest.
Graham-Kapowsin was third with 167, defending 1A state champion Orting finished fourth with 161.5. Yelm was fifth with 153.5. Sunnyside from eastern Washington was sixth and host White River finished seventh among the 16 teams.
Saturday, while Enumclaw High’s varsity wrestling team was taking the crown at the White River Classic wrestling tournament, the junior varsity Hornets were down the hill at the Sumner Invite eight-team varsity tournament, where they finished fourth.
Enumclaw topped 4A Kent-Meridian 42-30 during the opening round and posted a 36-30 victory over 2A Klahowya, which was third in state last year, a in Round 2.
The Hornets ran into host Sumner next, dropping a 42-24 match to the Spartans.
The Hornets dropped the next two matches with identical 48-31 scores to 6A Westview, Ore., and 2A Steilacoom to finish fourth.
Enumclaw’s Special Olympics bowling team brought home a pile of gold, silver and bronze medals from the regional tournament Nov. 6 at Secoma Lanes in Federal Way.
Right out of the blocks in the season opener Thursday, the Enumclaw High boys 200-yard medley relay qualified for February’s 3A state meet.
