As workers finished the final touches and removed the orange cones on the highway behind the event, a ceremonial ribbon was cut Wednesday and the traffic signal at the reconstructed 233rd intersection was turned on, marking the end of an 18-month project to widen the roadway.
A swath of Bonney Lake was plunged into darkness today after an electrical transformer on Bonney Lake Boulevard and next to city hall exploded. Sparks from the explosion started a fire on the ground below.
Even with the loss of outside hitter Taylor Watkins, who went on to play for Ohio State University, the Bonney Lake volleyball squad should still be able to carry on the tradition that has existed under the tutelage of coach Shirley Baker.

The Sumner Spartan cross country squad again appears loaded and, just as they did last season, followers should be prepared to see a lot of success on the approaching nippy fall afternoons.
Sumner High School’s boys golf team has retained all of its players this year, losing none to graduation.
That’s good news, because six of them were league titleists in the 2010 season. Seniors Brandon Barlow and Austin Spanier placed in the top 20 in state competition. Juniors Kai Taylor and Tom Murphy also made it to the state tournament, and Juniors Carson Dunham and Joe Bethards made districts.
The warning took effect at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, and extends until midnight.
The Panthers’ girls golf team tore up Oakbrook Golf and Country Club’s course yesterday, winning out over an unfortunately hindered Lakes High School 116-55.
School starts tomorrow morning, business-as-usual. Teachers will welcome students into their classrooms to begin another year of education.
But there was an important difference, sight-unseen: those teachers will not be working under contract.
Low turnover can be hard to come by in high school sports, but the Bonney Lake High girls golf team is in the lucky position of retaining its entire roster from last year.
“We didn’t have any seniors last year,” coach Sharon Lovinger said. “Unfortunately we do have seniors this year, so we will lose some of them after this season.”
Sumner High School’s girls swim team carried home a third-place state trophy and left six school records shattered in their wake at the close of the 2010 season. In South Puget Sound League 2A, they were undefeated champs. And the Spartans’ 200 freestyle relay team won the school’s second title.
Coach Andy Foster’s roster is graced by not only Sierra Espinal but also by Marie Wilson. These two are best friends and have been making an impression in South Puget Sound League 3A meets, regional and state tournaments for the past couple of years. Now this one-two punch appears to be poised to step out of the shadow cast by former Panther Veronica Stinnett and ignite this year’s BLHS cross country team.
