East Pierce Fire and Rescue fire fighters fought an early morning blaze at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sumner.

Emergency crews from East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to an early morning fire Sunday at the site of the old St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sumner.

The fire gutted administration offices and classrooms at the Faith Formation Building located at the corner of Kincaid and Park avenues next to the chapel.

The first firefighters on the scene reported flames and heavy smoke at the north end of the building. Crews from East Pierce joined firefighters from Sumner, Puyallup, Milton, Auburn, Pacific, Federal Way and Pierce County Fire District 8 in Edgewood.

More than 40 firefighters restricted the blaze to the two-story building, constructed in the 1950s as a single story structure to provide classrooms for youth ministry programs. The building was remodeled and a second story was added approximately 10 years ago.

The fire, first reported at 7:30 a.m., created a column of smoke that could be seen throughout the valley.

No one was injured and the cause is still under investigation.
