Carbonado kids put artwork on display

Students show talents in variety of endeavors

For years, Lollie Williams has taught art to Carbonado Historical School students. For just as many years, she's thought Carbonado students should be showing off their talent in a community forum.
"I have always felt that art is an important part of the classroom and can be easily incorporated into any curriculum," Williams said. "It gives students the freedom to explore and express new ideas in a variety of ways."
With the help of staff members Holly Barrett and Joe King and a group of talented students, her wish came true June 1 with the first Carbonado School Arts Festival.
Students in each grade, kindergarten through eighth, participated. Displays of two- and three-dimensional artwork hung around the library. Students performed vocal and instrumental programs for visitors. In the computer room, guests could watch student-created, three-minute claymation movies or listen to student-composed music.
Two students - fifth grader Haley Vallala and seventh-grader Holly Kuro - were singled out as "featured artists." They were available to chat with passers-by.
Vallala displayed her work since first grade. Her 15-piece collection included pastel and watercolor pieces.
"I just like drawing and painting," she said.
"Haley loves to draw that's what she does for a hobby," Williams said.
Kuro displayed seven pieces, including glitter glue, color marker and pencil, from this year's collection. Her interest in the arts began when she was young.
"I learn from my mom," she said.
Williams said Kuro is very talented.
Other students carried trays of hors d'oeuvres, greeted those arriving in the parking lot with umbrellas to shield them from the rain or handled out programs and carnations to visitors.
The event was well attended.
"Our community has always supported the school and the festival was a small way to give something back," Williams said. "As a teacher, it was great to see the students be so proud of their work. I plan on having another one next year."
